‘On track’: premier’s pledge to balance books step closer

Manitoba’s public accounts from the last fiscal year indicate the province is "moving in the right direction," according to NDP Finance Minister Adrien Sala. The annual payment of $205.00 + GST for one year will automatically renew at $233.00 + GST every 52 weeks, with a 10% discount from the regular annual price of $259.35. The offer is available to new and qualified returning subscribers only, with the option to cancel at any time.

In the 2025-26 fiscal year, the province's deficit was $832 million, nearly half of the previously forecasted $1.666-billion deficit and in line with the $794-million estimate presented in Budget 2026. Sala expressed pride in this outcome, citing the impact of tariffs on the economy, the worst wildfire season in 30 years, and a significant drought as challenges faced by the province.

Manitoba's net debt stands at $36.5 billion, which costs the province $2.3 billion annually in debt servicing charges. Despite other provinces struggling to control their deficits, Manitoba is on the right track, Sala stated, accompanied by Premier Wab Kinew. The province also announced a $600-million contribution to the fiscal stabilization fund, a.k.a. the rainy day fund, which is the largest in over 20 years and doubles the balance of the fund, ensuring the government can continue delivering services under any circumstances.

Sala emphasized that his government will meet its commitment to balance the province's books before the next provincial election, scheduled by October 5, 2027. Premier Wab Kinew added that the NDP government will achieve this goal, as promised. Progressive Conservative Leader Obby Khan, however, noted that most Manitobans do not feel the province is heading in the right direction, citing struggles with affordability, paying bills, and putting food on the table.

Khan accused the NDP government of lacking a plan to improve Manitobans' lives and only picking and choosing numbers to present to the public.
