Oil prices hit 11-day low: How US-Iran talks, Saudi shipments drive crude lower

Oil prices tumbled to their lowest level in 11 days on Monday, as investors awaited signs of potential diplomacy between the US and Iran. Brent crude futures slipped $2.12, or 2%, to $101.75 a barrel, while US WTI crude dropped about 2%. The October WTI contract fell $1.96 to $98.34 a barrel, and the November contract settled at $94.16.

Growing optimism for US-Iran talks played a major role in the price decline, with traders watching the upcoming United Nations General Assembly for potential diplomatic breakthroughs. Although tensions remain high with threats being exchanged, the conflict has not fully escalated. Saudi Arabia's oil shipments have also contributed to the drop, with the country increasing exports through the Strait of Hormuz following attacks on its oil infrastructure.

This shift has helped alleviate fears of a major crude supply shortage, as Saudi crude continues to reach global markets. JPMorgan analysts noted that Saudi Arabia's increased shipments have been a notable pivot in the market, with oil flows averaging 2.9 million barrels per day over the past six days, up from around 700,000 barrels per day in August.

As the situation in the Middle East remains tense, the combination of potential diplomatic progress and robust Saudi oil exports is easing supply concerns, leading to a reduction in the extra risk premium priced into oil prices.
