Official languages commissioner to intervene in N.B. French courthouse closure case

Canada’s official languages commissioner, Kelly Burke, plans to step in and help with a dispute over the closure of French-language courthouses in New Brunswick, according to a recent statement. The commissioner is set to intervene in the case before the Supreme Court of Canada, aiming to highlight the significance of equality for minority language communities.

In 2022, the New Brunswick government made changes to court services in the mainly francophone Bathurst region. This included closing the Caraquet courthouse and turning the Tracadie courthouse into a satellite court. A group of mayors from the Acadian Peninsula, located in northeastern New Brunswick, objected to the government's decision, claiming it would violate language rights.

Burke believes the case could have a big impact on how language rights are understood and applied across Canada. She emphasized that it is crucial for her to take this action to make a real difference in protecting official language minority communities and advancing language rights legal precedents.
