NISO Strengthens System Operators’ Capacity for Safe Grid Operations

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has launched the second phase of its capacity development program for system operators, aimed at enhancing technical skills and readiness for safe and reliable management of the national electricity grid. NISO's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Bello Mohammed, emphasized the importance of ongoing training to equip operators with the necessary expertise to handle the growing intricacies of the power system and respond adeptly to evolving operational circumstances.

He highlighted that NISO's role, as an independent system operator, necessitates technical proficiency, sound decision-making, discipline, teamwork, and an unwavering commitment to safety. Mohammed stressed that the program is also intended to foster a unified operational culture grounded in professionalism, integrity, impartiality, dependability, and ongoing advancement, encouraging participants to deepen their understanding of the grid code, which he identified as a crucial standard that defines system operators' duties.

Nafisatu Ali, NISO's Executive Director for System Operations, pointed out that system operators assume a pivotal role in autonomously and transparently operating, supervising, coordinating, and managing the national grid for secure, cost-effective electricity provision. She detailed their duties to encompass real-time grid management, coordination of power generation and flow, load distribution, outage administration, crisis response, and maintenance planning.

Babajide Ibironke, NISO's Executive Director for Finance and Corporate Services, stated that the program should yield tangible benefits for both participants and NISO. He added that attendees would be obligated to disseminate the knowledge gained to their respective teams, in accordance with the organization's knowledge-sharing policy.
