National theatre residency will prove Africa has World-Class venues — Davido

Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has announced a three-night residency at the National Theatre in Lagos from December 17 to 19, aimed at showcasing African artists' capabilities in creating global music moments while boosting the local economy and promoting Nigerian culture. The 34-year-old singer told CNN that performing his latest album, "Oriadé," alongside his biggest hits and collaborators will demonstrate Nigeria's ability to host world-class music events.

Davido's motivation for the residency stems from his desire to bring his international success back to Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of fostering the local culture. "Bringing everything back home is very important for the culture," he stated. The idea gained more traction after his first wider continental tour in eight years last year, which he found inspiring to perform from his home country.

Comparing Lagos' National Theatre to New York's Madison Square Garden, Davido highlighted the venue's significance in Nigeria's entertainment history and its potential to attract international visitors during the December festivities associated with "Detty December." He acknowledged that while overseas performances might yield higher earnings, bringing major productions home could still generate local opportunities and jobs.

The singer also noted that Afrobeats' international growth has opened opportunities for African musicians, but stressed that overseas success should not overshadow the importance of supporting audiences at home. He urged younger artists not to forget their roots and the fans who supported them before achieving international recognition.
