Mystique's lesbian relationship in Marvel's Wolverine is seemingly censored in certain parts of the world

Some players of Marvel's Wolverine have noticed that their game appears to have been altered to censor aspects of Mystique's lesbian relationship and marriage to Tyger. Social media posts, particularly on Reddit, show differences in how the relationship is referenced between the censored and uncensored versions of the game. One user posted a screenshot of a blurred photo of the couple taken on their wedding day, which can still be interacted with but is entirely blank.

Another user shared a blurred letter between the characters that cannot be read, captured from the Middle Eastern version of the game. The Reddit post also includes a clip where dialogue cuts out whenever the word "wife" is mentioned in reference to Mystique's relationship with Tyger. This censorship tactic, which involves muting certain words or removing them from subtitles, is common in Middle Eastern media, especially when dealing with religious matters or same-sex relationships.

While not all of Mystique's relationship with Tyger is censored, any mention of the relationship in the script or through in-game assets is modified in some way. The uncensored version does not cut out the marriage between the two characters, which is central to Mystique's part of the story and her friendship with Wolverine. This is not the first time Insomniac Games and Sony have faced censorship issues.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 was modified prior to its release in Saudi Arabia to remove LGBTQ+ references, including the Pride Flag and a side mission involving a gay couple. In 2023, the game was classified after Sony approved the requested modifications, although the specific changes were not disclosed. The acquisition of EA by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund has raised concerns among some within the company about potential changes to EA's identity. Regarding Marvel's Wolverine, Eurogamer has reached out to Sony for comment.
