Murder trial opens for ex-husband and in-laws of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi

A murder trial for the ex-husband and two former in-laws of Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi has commenced, three and a half years after her gruesome killing and dismemberment stunned the city. Abby Choi, a model and influencer, had her remains discovered in a Tai Po house on February 24, 2023. Alex Kwong, her ex-husband, Kwong Kau, her ex-husband's father, and Anthony Kwong, her ex-husband's brother, face charges of murder and hindering the lawful burial.

They could receive life sentences if found guilty. The trio appeared at the High Court on Monday, with the courtroom filled with observers eager to witness the high-profile case. Choi, who had over 100,000 Instagram followers, was 28 years old at the time of her death and had appeared in L’Officiel Monaco and discussed her Paris fashion week trip on social media prior to her murder.

Financial disputes over a luxury property between Choi and Kwong's family are said to have fueled the alleged crime. Choi divorced Kwong, with whom she shared two children, and later married Chris Tam, son of TamJai Yunnan Mixian's founder. A court order was issued on Monday to prevent media from discussing the trial until a jury is selected and to keep Choi's four children's identities confidential. The trial is projected to last 45 working days.
