Mumbai’s 122-Year-Old Taj Mahal Palace Enters World’s Top 50, Climbs Eight Places In Global Hotel Rankings

Mumbai's historic Taj Mahal Palace has earned a notable spot in The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2026 list, climbing eight places to rank 30th. The luxury hotel, located opposite the Gateway of India, is the sole Indian property featured among the world's elite hotels this year. Founded by industrialist Jamsetji Tata in 1903, the Taj Mahal Palace has been a landmark in Mumbai since its opening, welcoming royalty, world leaders, dignitaries, business moguls and celebrities throughout its 122-year history.

The annual ranking is determined by votes from over 800 experts worldwide, including travel journalists, hoteliers, educators, seasoned business travelers, and hospitality specialists. The Taj Mahal Palace is lauded for its grandeur, exemplary design, and hospitality, with its blend of old-world elegance and contemporary luxury standing out. A stay at the hotel starts at roughly Rs 25,000 per night, with prices varying based on the date, room category, and booking period.

In addition to the top-ranked Taj Mahal Palace, Jaipur's The Johri entered the extended rankings at No. 94, and The Oberoi Udaivilas in Udaipur also made the cut. Asia dominates the top three, with Rosewood Hong Kong claiming the No. 1 position, followed by Capella Bangkok and Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River. Atlantis The Royal in Dubai rounds out the global top five.
