Meta’s AI agent has been blocked from using Amazon.com

On Sunday night, Meta's AI assistant Muse began displaying an unusual error message to users attempting to purchase items on Amazon. GeekWire highlighted the message, which stated: “Continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violates Amazon’s Conditions of Use, to which our customers have agreed.” In essence, Muse is not permitted to act as a shopper on Amazon, and customers seeking products through the AI assistant will need to seek alternatives.

This situation appears to be a direct conflict between major technology companies. Amazon, for instance, boasts its own suite of foundation models and one of the most widely used inference platforms on the internet. Given that they are not legally obligated to grant Muse access, it's not evident why they would permit it. However, there are also compelling reasons why Amazon might be hesitant to enter the agentic commerce space just yet.

If Muse makes an erroneous purchase, Amazon would ultimately be responsible for resolving the issue, addressing both the dissatisfied customer and the disgruntled vendor. While Muse boasts one of the lower hallucination rates among AI models, it is still far from perfect. Even if Amazon perceives potential in agent-driven commerce, they may choose to wait for a few more release cycles before implementing any changes.
