Locals in Barcelona, Ibiza and Mallorca protest Spain's airport expansions

Madrid-Barajas Airport in Spain has uncovered a suspected baggage fraud operation after a group allegedly used children to remove suitcases and claim they were lost, resulting in potential payouts exceeding €90,000. Guardia Civil officers have investigated 22 people connected to the alleged scheme, which began drawing attention in May when one airline noticed an unusually high number of suspicious baggage claims.

The group reportedly bought tickets for low-cost domestic flights and checked suitcases into the aircraft's hold, then removed the bags from the airport by minors traveling with the group. An adult family member would then report the missing luggage to the airline and make a claim for compensation, which airline staff paid out. The Guardia Civil identified the pattern of claims by examining shared contact details among the passengers, revealing that different claims had the same telephone numbers or email addresses.

The investigation uncovered that the group created the illusion of lost luggage after the bags had already been removed from the airport, exploiting the compensation process for a double benefit. Most of those investigated have previous criminal records, and the individuals involved have been placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities.

The case highlights potential weaknesses in airline processes for checking baggage claims and raises questions about how airlines verify such claims.
