LG Energy Solution eyes US ESS market with local production bases

LG Energy Solution, a leading player in the energy storage system (ESS) market, is expanding its presence in the United States with the establishment of local production bases. The company recently completed the opening of its Michigan-Lansing plant, marking a significant step towards capturing the rapidly growing demand for ESS products.

The Lansing plant serves a dual purpose, functioning as a manufacturing hub for both lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for ESS applications and nickel cobalt manganese batteries for electric vehicles (EVs). With an impressive annual battery cell production capacity exceeding 35 gigawatt-hours, the plant is set to become a major player in the industry.

In August, LG Energy Solution Michigan-Lansing held its grand opening ceremony, signaling the plant's readiness to ramp up operations. The company has already commenced the production of pouch-type LFP batteries for ESS applications this year, and plans to increase output by introducing mass production of prismatic LFP batteries next year. This will mark LG Energy Solution's first venture into prismatic battery production in North America.

In addition to its domestic operations, LG Energy Solution Michigan has secured orders to supply EV batteries to Toyota, further demonstrating the company's growing influence in the American market. The company operates two production sites in Michigan, strategically located in Holland and Lansing. President Choi Dae-sik of LG Energy Solution Michigan expressed optimism about the company's ability to serve customers effectively from its dual-location facilities.
