‘Let’s stop the politics’ — Dafeamekpor calls for united fight against drug trafficking

Majority Leader and MP for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called for a united front against drug trafficking in Ghana, urging his fellow citizens to set aside political differences and support government efforts to combat the issue. In a post on social media, Dafeamekpor highlighted a series of drug seizures and arrests that have occurred in the country between 2017 and 2024, involving both Ghanaians and foreign nationals.

These seizures included cocaine and heroin shipments intercepted at the Kotoka International Airport and other locations across Ghana, as well as a significant cocaine haul in Nsawam in 2008.

Dafeamekpor also referenced a 2009 report by the United States Department of State, which labeled Ghana as a transshipment point for illegal drugs, particularly cocaine from South America and heroin from Afghanistan and Pakistan. The report noted that drugs often passed through Accra’s Kotoka International Airport en route to Europe and the United States, and that Ghana also experienced a significant domestic drug problem.

The South Dayi MP used these examples to argue that drug trafficking is an ongoing national problem that has existed long before the current administration. He urged his fellow Ghanaians to put aside partisan politics and work together to support the government's efforts to tackle the drug menace. Dafeamekpor emphasized that Ghana had already been labeled as a hub for drug trafficking under the previous NPP government in 2008, highlighting the need for a collective and sustained approach to the issue.
