Landtagswahl MV: Schwesig setzt auf Rot-Rot-Grün in MV

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's Ministerpräsidentin Manuela Schwesig (SPD) aims to discuss a coalition government with Greens and Left parties following the Landtagswahl. Schwesig announced this after SPD faction meetings in Berlin. The two parties previously governed together in a two-party coalition, but that majority will no longer suffice.

The AfD emerged as the strongest party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with the SPD and Linke falling short of a majority. Schwesig reasserted her claim to the Ministerpräsident position during the voting evening, stating, "The AfD will not be able to form a government." 60% of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's citizens expressed support for a government comprising democratic parties.

The Greens have already indicated their willingness to participate in a red-red-green government. Greens' candidate Claudia Müller assessed her party's election results as successful, though she noted the overall result may not satisfy everyone. Polarity may have strengthened the AfD, a trend observed in other federal states. As of the preliminary results, the AfD holds 38.2% of the votes, followed by the SPD at 35.5%.

The Left and Greens also secured seats in the Landtag. The CDU and BSW failed to reach the threshold. The CDU's worst performance in a Landtagswahl in German history was reported. The AfD also claimed the mandate to form a government, with Ministerpräsident candidate Leif-Erik Holm predicting a red-red-green coalition, stating, "We will be the only opposition in the Landtag."
