Lagos orders evacuation of residents in flood-prone communities

The Lagos State Government has ordered residents in flood-prone communities to evacuate to higher ground as a seven-day flood alert was issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency. This precaution is necessary to prevent casualties and property damage. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced this in a statement on Monday.

The alert affects Lagos and 14 other states, with vulnerable areas such as Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Oke-Ira Nla in Ajah, Kirikiri, Ilaje Waterfront Jetty and Jetty Terminal B. Wahab emphasized the gravity of the NiHSA flood advisory and urged residents to take early action, stressing that preparation and temporary relocation can prevent loss of lives and property.

He advised residents to move to higher ground and stay there until the rainy season peak subsides. Communities along the Ogun River and other major waterways are advised to exercise heightened caution, as rising water levels in connected river systems could impact downstream communities. Wahab listed several settlements that should remain on high alert between September 19 and 25.

Residents living near bodies of water are advised to monitor official flood forecasts and be ready to relocate temporarily. The government will continue monitoring and collaborating with federal agencies to manage hydrological developments. Residents are urged to support flood mitigation efforts by keeping drains clear and avoiding flooded roads or paths.
