Lagos alerts motorists against fake traffic fine messages, malicious links

The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has issued a public alert to motorists and residents regarding fraudulent text messages and malicious online links falsely accusing individuals of traffic violations. In a cautionary advisory, the ministry emphasized the need for heightened vigilance when encountering unsolicited messages about alleged traffic offenses.

It strongly discouraged recipients from clicking on unverified links, sharing personal data, or making payments via unauthorized third-party platforms. The ministry explained that these deceitful messages aim to trick unsuspecting individuals into disclosing sensitive personal and banking information. Furthermore, it warned motorists about deceptive platforms that offer fictitious discounts on traffic fines as a means to lure victims into making payments.

The Lagos State Government explicitly stated that it does not provide any discounts on statutory traffic penalties through its platforms. Approved traffic fines are fixed and can only be settled through authorized channels. Motorists were advised to authenticate traffic violation notices and verify their vehicle status through only the official online platforms established by the Lagos State Government.

The ministry urged residents to stay alert, report suspicious messages and websites, and avoid using unofficial platforms for traffic-related inquiries or payments. The ministry reiterated that only verified government channels should be utilized when dealing with traffic violation notices, fines, and related transactions.
