Kenya: Atwoli Questions Sifuna's Political Networks As 2027 Presidential Bid Takes Shape

Nairobi, Kenya – Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary-General Francis Atwoli has contended that Africa's political landscape is heavily influenced by existing political systems, networks, and governance experience. Addressing Citizen TV, Atwoli asserted that aspiring presidents in Africa require more than activism or visibility to succeed in national elections.

"There isn't an activist in Africa who has become a president," Atwoli emphasized. He argued that individuals who ascend to the presidency usually originate from well-established political structures and possess a comprehension of governance operations, governmental methods, and the connections essential for garnering support. "In Africa, those who seize government positions come from established systems.

People who comprehend governance, the tactics of governance, those who have connections in Cabinet who can advocate for them," he explained. Atwoli then probed the extent of Edwin Sifuna's political networks within the government. "If I asked you, how many friends does Sifuna have in government?" he queried. The comments follow Sifuna's rising political prominence and his declaration of intentions to vie for the presidency prior to the 2027 General Election.

As the Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi leader, Sifuna has been conducting political mobilization across the country and has publicly stated his ambition to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 presidential race. Atwoli has previously expressed concerns about the timing of Sifuna's presidential aspirations, suggesting the senator must develop a more robust political team and accumulate more experience before contending for the nation's highest office.

On September 20, Atwoli also described Sifuna as a future leader and acknowledged the senator's efforts to promote his political image, while maintaining that he considered the timing of a presidential bid premature. In recent weeks, Sifuna has intensified his interactions with voters and political stakeholders as he constructs the Linda Mwananchi movement.

The senator has expressed his intention to challenge Ruto in the 2027 presidential election and has called for opposition collaboration ahead of the contest.
