Jehovah’s Witnesses update policy: Acceptance of blood components now a matter of conscience

The Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses announced on Friday that every individual member is now responsible for deciding whether to accept or donate the main components of blood, such as red cells, white cells, plasma, or platelets. This personal decision making regarding blood transfusions remains unchanged from the organization's long-standing policy of refusing whole-blood transfusions based on religious beliefs.

Paul Gillies, the international spokesman for Jehovah's Witnesses at World Headquarters, emphasized that blood remains sacred to the faith, representing precious gifts from God. The organization recognizes that medical decisions concerning blood components are a matter of personal conscience, left to each Witness and their God, Jehovah.

This adjustment follows earlier updates on blood fractions and the use of one's own blood in medical procedures, where the Bible does not provide guidance, leaving the decision entirely up to the individual. Jehovah's Witnesses value life and seek the best medical care available, even if it means consulting doctors who can provide effective treatment in line with their values and beliefs.

The organization's congregations do not interfere in personal decisions related to blood transfusions, and they continue to respect and support the choices made by their fellow believers.
