Impact of VC on high temperature cycling of LFP/Gr cells

High-temperature cycling of LFP/Gr cells in electric vehicles and grid energy storage has become crucial due to their increasing adoption. Researchers at Dalhousie University investigated the effects of vinylene carbonate (VC) concentrations (1% to 5%) on cell lifetime, along with lithium salts LiFSI and LiPF6. Upon reaching 80% capacity retention, post-mortem analyses revealed that higher VC concentrations significantly improved cell lifetime, reduced Fe dissolution, and suppressed electrolyte degradation pathways, including ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC) and dimethyl 2,5-dioxahexane carboxylate (DMOHC) formation.

While LiFSI-based LFP/Gr cells showed enhanced performance, they produced gas at 70°C, which could be mitigated by using LiPF6 salt.
