I was not aware that he had died: Museveni mourns Jirongo months after his death

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni mourned the recent passing of former Kenyan senator Cyrus Jirongo, admitting he was unaware of Jirongo's death until very recently. Museveni described Jirongo as a patriotic leader who served Kenya with dedication and expressed condolences to his family, relatives, friends and the Kenyan people.

The Kenyan politician, who was a former Member of Parliament for Lugari and later served as a Cabinet minister, died in a road accident in December 2025. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations confirmed that Jirongo suffered multiple crush injuries from blunt-force trauma in a motor accident on December 13, 2025, along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.

Museveni recalled their interaction in 2019, when Jirongo alerted him about Uganda's petroleum import arrangements through middlemen in Kenya. This revelation prompted Museveni to task then Minister Irene Muloni to resolve the issue, ultimately leading to a better arrangement in August 2023. The arrangement significantly reduced the costs of diesel, petrol, and aviation fuel for Uganda.
