How G-5 helped Obi defeat Atiku in Edo, C’River during 2023 election — Wike

Minister Nyesom Wike disclosed on Monday that the G-5, a coalition of southern governors, strategically worked against Atiku Abubakar's presidential bid during the 2023 election. The G-5 governors, all PDP members, recognized Atiku and the strength of the PDP in the South-South region as a concern and opted to allow Peter Obi to win some states.

They aimed to prevent Atiku from benefiting from the votes in Edo and Cross River, where the PDP was strong, as a victory for Obi would not significantly advance his presidential bid. Wike specifically questioned Obi's ability to replicate his 2023 performance in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Delta states, citing the changed political circumstances, particularly the controversy surrounding the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, which has been diminished since 2023.
