Herdsmen uprooting our cassava tubers, feeding them to cattle – Umunneochi women

Women from Obinolu Ngodo, located in Abia State's Umunneochi Local Government Area, have taken to the streets to express their outrage over the actions of Fulani herdsmen. These women, representing various villages within Obinolu, claim that the herdsmen have been ruthlessly uprooting their cassava crops and feeding the remains to their cattle.

The women allege that the invasion and destruction of their farms have led to an increased risk of hunger in their community. In their urgent plea, they warn that larger herds of cattle have trampled on their other crops, exacerbating the situation.

Upon arriving at the local government headquarters in Nkwoagu, the women presented their evidence: bundles of uprooted cassava stems, a tangible testament to the damage inflicted by the herdsmen. The women's placards, displayed prominently, read: "Our people may die of hunger," "We are now afraid to enter our farms," "We don't want Fulani herdsmen in our farms," and "Government, save us now."

Addressing the protesters, Umunneochi Local Government Area's Chairman, Sunny Afurobi, acknowledged receiving similar reports of farm destruction in another nearby community. He assured the women that steps would be taken to investigate the issue. Afurobi emphasized Governor Alex Otti's commitment to the security of the people, noting that the government remains vigilant in addressing security concerns. He added, "We will investigate the problem because we cannot abandon our farms."
