Google opens pre-orders for $899 Googlebook laptops built around Gemini AI

Alphabet's Google announced on Monday the opening of pre-orders for Googlebook, a new premium laptop category tailored for Android users and powered by the company's Gemini AI tools. The initial models, set to be released by Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, will commence at a price point of $899. Each device is expected to boast a runtime of up to 14 hours on battery, according to Google.

This launch coincides with Apple's strategic move into the affordable laptop market with its $699 MacBook Neo, intensifying competition in an industry where Chromebook manufacturers have traditionally prioritized affordability and simplicity for students and cost-conscious consumers.

Googlebook offers a premium upgrade to the ChromeOS formula, featuring more robust hardware, AI functionalities, and deeper Android integration. This represents Google's most recent endeavor to showcase the capabilities of ChromeOS, following the successful launch of the Pixelbook in 2017 and Pixelbook Go in 2019. The device lineup encompasses Gemini tools designed to assist users in drafting and organizing text, answering queries about content displayed on their screens, and seamlessly resuming tasks from an Android smartphone.

The Googlebook platform is constructed upon the Android technology framework, augmented with desktop foundations derived from ChromeOS. This hybrid approach is aimed at facilitating a smooth transition for users between their smartphones and computing devices.
