Germany’s Merz faces struggle to stay on track after humiliating regional election defeat

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz faced challenges to maintain his position and advance his agenda on Monday following his party's humiliating electoral losses. Voters ousted his party from a state legislature for the first time, and the party's support in Berlin plummeted, losing more than half its backing. The CDU plummeted to second place in Berlin behind the hard-left Left Party, with Merz's party potentially retaining city hall depending on coalition negotiations.

The defeat added to Merz's difficulties, which had already been exacerbated by a recent loss to the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in Saxony-Anhalt. AfD emerged as the strongest party in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but the Social Democrats, the junior party in Merz's national coalition, were in second place after focusing on the state governor, Manuela Schwesig, as a counterbalance to AfD.

A left-leaning coalition under Schwesig would have a majority in the new regional legislature. While Merz's party acknowledged the need for reforms, including a controversial overhaul of the pension system and tax cuts, party leaders will need to address voter concerns and solidify support within the coalition. Five state elections are scheduled for next year, three of them in April, with one in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany's most populous state, home to a potential Merz successor.
