Gallant Falconets Bow out of U20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria's women's national football team, known as the Falconets, concluded their participation in the 2026 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Poland on a high note despite a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Colombia. The match, held in Łódź, witnessed Colombia securing a decisive victory through a stoppage-time goal by Valerin Loboa. Throughout the quarter-final encounter, both teams struggled to break through, showcasing a flurry of half-chances.

Nigeria displayed dominance in set-pieces, with several corners from Tumininu Adeshina and Kafayat Mafisere. Their attacking efforts, spearheaded by Janet Akekoromowei, Favour Nkwocha, Tosin Rafiu, and Onyedikachi Ekezie, kept the Colombian defense on tenterhooks. Akekoromowei even hit the crossbar with a precise shot in the 19th minute, while Tumininu Adeshina's deft strike was brilliantly saved by Colombia's goalkeeper, Luisa Agudelo.

Despite the physical nature of the game and disciplinary actions, Nigeria's players maintained their resolve. However, the tide turned dramatically in the 77th minute when Nigeria was reduced to 10 players following a red card for Kafayat Mafisere in the 77th minute.
