GAA to meet AFL over player recruitment protocols

The All Ireland Gaelic Football Association (GAA) is set to meet with representatives from the Australian Football League (AFL) to address concerns over player recruitment protocols. President Jarlath Burns has announced that a meeting will be held to find a more acceptable protocol between the two associations. Members of the GAA have expressed unease regarding the recruitment of young players by AFL clubs without informing their respective GAA club or county board members.

Some management teams have only discovered AFL trials of their members through social media, causing significant concern.

Kerry county board chairman Patrick O'Sullivan stated that the current situation cannot continue and urged for more regulation. He emphasized that the GAA cannot ignore the issue and called for action. The GAA believes that the AFL should acknowledge the investment of time and effort made by young players through compensation or equipment. Furthermore, they need clear regulations regarding this practice, as it is causing unnecessary stress on clubs and their members.

A record 46 women are involved with AFL clubs in Australia for the 2026 season, representing a significant increase from 39 last year. Additionally, 14 men are contracted to AFL clubs, with more potentially considering a move to the professional game. GAA President Burns confirmed that talks with the AFL on this matter are imminent.

He expressed that the GAA is closely monitoring the interest of the AFL in their Gaelic players and is actively seeking a protocol to self-regulate the issue. The meeting with AFL representatives will be held before the end of the month, making the issue a top priority for the GAA.
