Fuel hike: Tricycle operators raise fares in FCT

Some tricycle drivers in Nigeria's capital city have raised their fares following a spike in petrol prices. The cost of petrol has risen to between N1,410 and N1,450 per litre, up from N1,265. This increase, driven by a Dangote Petroleum Refinery gantry price rise, adds to the financial strain on commuters already grappling with higher transportation costs.

Fare hikes have been observed on several routes across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). For instance, the fare from Gudu to Lokogoma Junction has increased from N200 to N300, and from Kabusa Junction to Apo Roundabout from N300 to N400. Commuters in Kubwa, such as Mr. Daniel Aaron and Mr. Tony Akinbode, have expressed difficulty in commuting and supporting their families due to the soaring transportation expenses.

The fare hikes came with little warning, prompting commuters to adjust their budgets quickly. Some analysts have criticized the Federal Government's push for compressed natural gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel, arguing that it lacks accessibility and infrastructure compared to petrol. Despite this, the government continues to promote CNG as part of efforts to alleviate the impact of volatile fuel prices on Nigerians.
