FG Targets Higher Meat Supply, Household Income as Kano Farmers Get Livestock Boost

The Nigerian federal government has launched a new initiative to enhance the productivity of small-ruminant farmers in Kano State, providing 200 sheep and goat farmers with animals, feed, and financial assistance. The training, conducted by the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, took place over three days and focused on improving animal health, productivity, and returns from sheep and goat farming.

The intervention targets farmers in Fagge, Tarauni, and Gwale Local Government Areas, aiming to reduce production losses and boost household incomes. Dr. Chinyere Ijeoma Akujobi, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized the importance of equipping farmers with both productive assets and the technical skills necessary to manage their livestock effectively.

The training covered improved practices in animal feeding, breeding, healthcare, and husbandry, highlighting the importance of knowledge in maximizing economic returns from livestock enterprises. The development of the subsector is seen as crucial for Nigeria's livestock economy due to its low entry barrier and potential to provide households with a regular source of food and income.

The beneficiaries, including individuals with disabilities, received sheep and goats, animal feed, and stipends to implement the lessons learned. Kano State, known for its significant agricultural production, stands to benefit from this initiative by increasing the supply of animals for meat and other livestock products, while also creating additional income-generating activities in areas such as animal feed, veterinary services, trading, and processing.

The collaboration between federal and state governments, along with organizations like NASHGODAN and the Africa Women in Animal Resources, Farming, and Agribusiness Network, underscores the collective effort to empower farmers and transform their support into sustainable livelihoods.
