Facebook, Instagram recover after outage hits thousands of users

Meta Platforms' Facebook and Instagram services were restored to normal operation after a brief disruption that affected thousands of US users on Sunday night. Reports of outages spiked to over 17,000 for Facebook and more than 5,000 for Instagram, but dropped sharply within an hour. By 10 pm Eastern Time, complaints for both platforms had significantly decreased.

Meta has not yet provided a public explanation for the outage or detailed information on the cause, affected systems, or whether it originated within shared infrastructure between Facebook and Instagram. While the incident was short-lived compared to previous Meta service failures, it demonstrated the impact a limited technical disruption can have on users when major social networks encounter problems simultaneously.

The outage was reported in several countries, including Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, and Mexico, though the numbers were lower than in the US. Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp also experienced increased complaints during the same period, though the data did not confirm if all issues stemmed from the same technical fault.

Despite Meta's reliance on extensive networks and systems, the cause of Sunday's disruption remains unknown. The outage highlighted the limitations of crowdsourced outage measurements and the importance of official information from service operators.
