In 2026, German households are expected to face higher heating costs, according to a study by co2online. The consultancy firm predicts that heating oil and wood pellets will become significantly more expensive in its 2026 "Heizspiegel". While natural gas prices are currently higher, the organization anticipates a slight relief for consumers due to low procurement costs at the start of the year and the elimination of the gas storage levy.

However, the recently increased wholesale prices may eventually impact consumer prices, potentially leading to a rise in gas costs by the end of 2026 or during 2027, according to a spokesperson. The study predicts a 24 percent increase in heating costs for an oil-heated 70-square-meter apartment in a multi-family building to 1,275 euros.

For wood pellets, the forecast is a 17 percent rise to 870 euros in annual heating costs, attributed to the ongoing shortage of pellet raw materials due to a weak construction sector. Natural gas experts, on the other hand, foresee a four percent decrease in annual costs to 1,120 euros.
