Electricity Could Get Cheaper for Small Consumers

The Power Division is exploring a proposal to alleviate financial burdens on non-protected domestic electricity consumers, according to Ministry of Energy sources shared with ProPakistani. Currently, households lose their protected consumer status if they surpass the 200-unit electricity consumption mark at any point during the billing cycle.

The government is contemplating a proposal that would only charge the additional tariff for the month in which the threshold is exceeded, rather than obligating consumers to pay higher rates for several consecutive months.

Under the existing system, consumers who exceed the 200-unit threshold must pay higher rates for a maximum of six months, even if their subsequent electricity usage drops below the limit. This proposed review aims to address the implications of the current mechanism on domestic consumers and offer relief to households whose consumption temporarily surpasses the 200-unit mark.
