Dholawad Dam Only 45% Full, MP’s Ratlam Reserves Water For Drinking

Ratlam, a city in Madhya Pradesh, is facing a water shortage as the Dholawad Dam, its primary drinking water source, is only 45% full due to a below-average monsoon rainfall. The water administration has taken the unprecedented step of reserving the dam's remaining water for human consumption and withholding it from wheat irrigation.

During a recent inter-departmental review meeting, the collector instructed officials to prevent the use of dam water for wheat cultivation. The agriculture, horticulture, and related departments have been asked to advise farmers to opt for water-efficient crops like gram. The region received only 22 inches of rain by mid-September, a 40% drop from the usual amount.

By September 12, the rainfall had fallen to 20.28 inches, indicating a 38% deficit. Last year, the district had received around 48 inches of rainfall during the same period. With the monsoon showing signs of receding, there is little hope for a substantial increase in the dam's water level, putting more pressure on authorities to preserve the existing supply for drinking water needs.

To combat water theft and unauthorized irrigation, the collector has ordered strict action, including seizing pumps or irrigation equipment found near the dam and registering cases against the responsible parties.
