Culture as Diplomat: How cultural institutions shape international relationships

The Qatar Museums and Institut du monde arabe have announced a public discussion titled "Culture as Diplomat: How Cultural Institutions Shape International Relationships". The event, moderated by Dr Safwan Masri, will bring together Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani and Anne-Claire Legendre for a conversation at the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar on September 24 at 11am.

The discussion will delve into the role that museums, exhibitions and artistic collaborations play in fostering understanding between communities and strengthening relationships that extend beyond individual cultural events. The speakers will explore how partnerships and exchange programmes between cultural institutions facilitate dialogue and trust, complementing traditional diplomatic efforts and bridging connections between people of diverse backgrounds.

Legendre, a trailblazing figure in French diplomacy and arts, has led the Institut du monde arabe since February 2026. She is the first woman to hold this position and holds extensive experience as an ambassador, advisor, spokesperson, and consul general. She has previously served as the French ambassador to Kuwait, North Africa and the Middle East, as well as the spokesperson for the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, and the Consul General of France in New York.

Sheikha Al Mayassa, the Chairperson of Qatar Museums, emphasized the profound impact of culture in connecting humanity and enriching daily life. She sees the event as an opportunity to discuss how cultural institutions in Qatar, France, and across the Arab world can continue to foster new channels for conversation and cooperation.

Legendre, in turn, highlighted the shared purpose of culture and diplomacy in creating conditions for dialogue and mutual understanding, stating that cultural institutions can introduce societies to one another through artists, ideas, histories, and experiences.
