Charges to be dropped against 5 pro-Palestinian protesters at Stanford after mistrial

Five pro-Palestinian protesters who faced felony charges following a 2024 protest at Stanford University will see their charges dismissed, according to prosecutors. The defendants, including one current and four former Stanford students, were arrested on June 5, 2024, after barricading themselves inside university offices in support of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

A mistrial was declared in February after jurors could not reach a verdict. Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen planned to pursue a new trial but his office was removed from the case due to concerns over his comments and campaign fundraising. Attorney General Rob Bonta's office took over and announced that the defendants must complete 100 hours of community service and pay $52,000 in restitution to the university.

All restitution has been paid. The five defendants are set to have their charges dismissed once they fulfill the community service and restitution requirements.
