Canucks Rebuilding More Than Roster in Franchise-Wide Overhaul

The Vancouver Canucks are embarking on a franchise-wide overhaul, extending beyond a mere roster rebuilding. The team aims to rebuild impaired fan passion in western Canada and cleanse a tarnished image, setting the stage for an entirely new era. The 2026-27 season will see the Canucks with a completely new front-office leadership.

Former star players and Hockey Hall of Famers Henrik and Daniel Sedin have been promoted from their previous player development roles to co-presidents of hockey operations. Ryan Johnson, who previously worked with the Canucks' AHL affiliate in Abbotsford, British Columbia, has been promoted to General Manager. Ryan Stewart, from the Sharks, has been hired as the team's director of hockey strategy and player evaluation.

The Canucks have also brought in Manny Malhotra, a former Abbotsford coach, as their new head coach. Along with these changes, the team is introducing a new branding campaign, "Van As One," which will run across their media platforms, at Rogers Arena, and other locations in Vancouver. Additionally, the Canucks are hosting their first-ever Fan Fest, scheduled for September 24-26 at Rogers Arena, just before the start of the 2026-27 season.

The event will include the team's newly remade and rebranded Fan Gathering Space, RBC Landing. Canucks Sports & Entertainment president of business operations Michael Doyle emphasizes the significance of this initiative, stating that they are creating a rally cry to unite their fans and bring them into the new generation. The Canucks' 58 standings points last year marked a decline, with the team finishing 32nd.

However, the Canucks aim to bounce back, acknowledging that their playoff return is a byproduct of the broader process they are undertaking. The team's average player age is 26.65, making them the sixth-youngest in the NHL, with an average league experience of 7.6 years, the fourth-lowest among the 32 teams.
