Canada invites the UK to join its economic alliance with the European Union

Canada's Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne has proposed that the United Kingdom join the economic alliance Canada is negotiating with the European Union, according to comments to the BBC. Champagne emphasized that while Canada is independent and sovereign, it is stronger when working together. The British government has not yet responded to the proposal, but Champagne suggested that Canada and the United Kingdom share the same values and align in their vision of the world.

He added that the world has changed, including America, and thus a change is necessary. The proposal follows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's suggestion to open the door for Canada to become the bloc's first associate member, a status not provided for in EU treaties and still in the process of formalization. Champagne described a recent trip by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to Strasbourg as an effort to build the alliance of the future.

Carney has previously floated the idea of an alliance of "middle powers" working together on economic growth, resilience, and security. The proposal comes amid a trade war between Canada and the United States, with both sides imposing tit-for-tat tariffs since talks collapsed in August. Champagne stated that the conflict was not one Canada chose, but rather a measured, targeted, and strategic response to infringe on its economic sovereignty.

The invitation to the United Kingdom poses a delicate position for the country, as it recently renegotiated its trade deal with the United States and raises questions about its post-Brexit positioning towards Europe.
