Businessman arrested after Sandton restaurant threats loses lease and company positions

Lawrence Chamurwa Mudzinganyima, a businessman who threatened women at the upscale Vlamo restaurant in Sandton, has lost his lease and executive positions. The incident, which was captured on video and went viral, prompted Mudzinganyima to issue an apology for his unacceptable and unjustifiable behaviour. He acknowledged the severity of his actions, especially in a country grappling with high levels of violence against women, and vowed to cooperate with law enforcement. Mudzinganyima has been arrested and released on warning to appear in court on October 1, 2026.

In response to the incident, Steyn City Properties, the property management company, terminated Mudzinganyima's lease agreement. Additionally, Moriel Infrastructure Group, where Mudzinganyima served as chairman and director, has removed him from his positions and severed all ties with him. Both companies expressed strong condemnation of his actions, emphasizing their commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment.

The Transport Minister and the Public Works and Infrastructure Minister have also directed their respective boards to investigate whether Moriel Infrastructure Group complied with legal requirements and contract terms upon their appointment. The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) is under scrutiny for potentially granting contracts to a company that did not meet the necessary qualifications.
