Braves clinch NL East crown and help Red Sox punch playoff ticket

The Atlanta Braves secured the NL East title for the seventh time in nine years with a decisive 4-2 victory over the Houston Astros on Sunday. Mike Yastrzemski drove in three runs during a four-run sixth inning, clinching the win for the Braves. Ozzie Albies contributed an RBI single before Yastrzemski's game-winning three-run homer to right field, off of Houston pitcher Bryan King.

This victory marks a turnaround for the Atlanta Braves, who finished last season at 76-86 and missed the playoffs. Under new manager Walt Weiss, the Braves have rebounded, finishing the season with a strong 92-64 record. They have achieved at least 90 wins for the fifth time in the last eight seasons, solidifying their position at the top of the league.

The Houston Astros, who had their playoff hopes dashed after being swept by the Braves, entered the game trailing the Texas Rangers by a game in the AL West. Despite the loss, they secured the tiebreaker in the standings. Jose Altuve and Yainer Diaz each hit a home run for the Astros, but the team left bases loaded in the first and fifth innings, contributing to their downfall.

Victor Mederos (5-1) entered the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning, striking out Altuve before inducing a groundout by Diaz.

Starting pitchers played a crucial role in the game. Atlanta's Martín Pérez allowed just one run on six hits over 4 1/3 innings. Houston's Hunter Brown pitched five scoreless innings, striking out 10 batters. The Braves' bullpen, led by Dylan Dodd's save, sealed the win, ensuring the Braves' place at the top of the NL East standings.

Looking ahead, the Braves will face RHP JR Ritchie (1-3, 5.03 ERA) in the first game of a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at home. Meanwhile, the Astros will start RHP Cristian Javier (2-6, 5.31) against the Seattle Mariners in a two-game series in Seattle.
