BMC To Process Transfers Of 1,695 Engineers Through Online System From October 1

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to streamline the transfer process for 1,695 engineers from October 1 to 15 through an online system. A total of 836 engineers had submitted their transfer preferences by the September 20 deadline, covering junior, sub-, and assistant engineers who have completed over three years in their respective departments.

The controversy surrounding "cash-for-transfer" involving 163 engineers, whose transfers were stayed and cancelled, prompted the BMC to introduce this computerized, randomised online system to ensure transparency and eliminate discretion in transfers. Among the 1,695 engineers eligible for transfer, 485 are junior engineers, 1,070 are sub-engineers, and 140 are assistant engineers.

The engineers had a 15-day window to submit their transfer preferences online, with the system automatically generating new postings based on vacancies and manpower requirements. The official stated that there would be no scope for interference by officials as the process is handled by the system itself. Those seeking transfers on medical or disability grounds can still apply offline, while those who fail to submit preferences will be transferred automatically.

The BMC's engineering cadre currently faces a significant manpower crunch, with 600 junior engineer positions, 270 sub-engineer positions, and 195 assistant engineer positions remaining unfilled.
