Bessent hails ‘very successful’ China talks on AI and trade

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent praised the "very successful" discussions with his Chinese counterparts, which covered artificial intelligence, trade and investment, in the days leading up to the upcoming summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Speaking to reporters after a lengthy session in New York with China's Vice Premier He Lifeng and other officials, Bessent revealed that the two nations have agreed to establish a dialogue on AI to establish shared objectives and address potential threats.

They have scheduled further meetings to maintain discussions on the matter. Li Chenggang, the top Chinese trade negotiator, confirmed that the talks took place in a positive atmosphere, and a working group will continue the talks on Monday. Bessent stated that the U.S. has proposed the establishment of a notification mechanism between the two countries and a shared vision of common goals and threats, which will be referred to as the "U.S.-China AI dialogue."

Later this week, Trump is set to host Xi at the White House, marking Xi's first state visit to Washington in over a decade.
