Belarus opposition leader warns US of ‘risky’ deal with Lukashenko

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya has cautioned the United States about the potential risks of engaging in business with the Lukashenko regime. Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Tikhanovskaya expressed her concern that any deal with President Alexander Lukashenko would primarily benefit repressive forces and the Russian war machine. She emphasized that while Americans may be aware of Lukashenko's character, President Donald Trump's intentions are also well-known.

Tikhanovskaya's remarks come as Trump announced his administration is exploring a major fertilizer purchase from Belarus, which he claims would be more cost-effective than importing from Canada. The US president's comments were made on his Truth Social platform, reflecting the growing diplomatic efforts to secure the fertilizer deal.

Despite the US re-engaging with Belarus and easing sanctions, the country remains under scrutiny for its human rights record and its support of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Since the 2020 election, hundreds of dissidents have been imprisoned under Lukashenko's rule, with the regime continuing to suppress political opposition.

Tikhanovskaya praised US efforts to free political prisoners, but urged Washington not to underestimate the regime's propensity to imprison more individuals in exchange. She highlighted the revolving-door dynamic, where releasing a few prisoners often results in the detention of others. Tikhanovskaya estimated that despite the release of hundreds of political prisoners, more than 900 remain in detention.

To maintain pressure on the Lukashenko regime, Tikhanovskaya called for the continuation of sanctions, particularly those imposed by European nations. She emphasized the need for the international community to remain principled in its stance against the regime while supporting the Belarusian people.
