Baker Mayfield isn’t playing like a $55 million quarterback with Buccaneers off to 0-2 start

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently on a 0-2 start, marking their worst opening to this point since 2014. Quarterback Baker Mayfield, who signed a $165 million, three-year extension earlier this month, is struggling to justify the contract. Mayfield threw for 182 yards, one touchdown and one interception, but his mistakes have cost the team dearly.

Emeka Egbuka had a chance for a go-ahead touchdown, but Mayfield threw the pass out of his reach. The Buccaneers have 28 interceptions and 27 fumbles since 2024. Mayfield forced a Cleveland Browns' throw that was intercepted, but also took three sacks and made several negative plays. The run game was effective at times, with Bucky Irving rushing for 89 yards.

However, the offensive line struggled, with three sacks and critical holding penalties. Linebacker Alex Anzalone has had a difficult time replacing Lavonte David, missing tackles, struggling in coverage and receiving an unnecessary roughness penalty. The Buccaneers are currently 2-9 since a 6-2 start last season, and their playoff chances are slim after an 0-2 start.
