Azimio rebrands as Ukombozi Alliance as opposition seeks to consolidate ahead of 2027

Nairobi, Kenya - The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition has officially changed its name to the Ukombozi Alliance, signaling a strategic shift for the opposition coalition as they prepare for the 2027 General Election. This change was announced by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a media briefing attended by several opposition leaders, including Siaya Governor James Orengo.

Musyoka stated that the rebranding marked a fresh start for the coalition, allowing them to coordinate their constituent parties under a new political identity. The new alliance will operate on the philosophy of "One Term, One Team, One Coalition," emphasizing unity and a limited term for political leaders. The immediate focus will be on engaging the Jubilee Party, with a meeting scheduled for Tuesday to discuss the next steps following the coalition's reorganization.

The rebranding also reflects a broader restructuring effort aimed at enhancing the coalition's appeal and expanding its membership. Among the expected additions are the Umoja na Maendeleo Party and the United Green Movement. Musyoka defended President Uhuru Kenyatta against recent criticism, arguing that the upcoming election will not be a contest between Kenyatta and President William Ruto, but rather between Ruto and other political leaders challenging Ruto's authority.

The coalition's rebranding comes amid a broader trend of opposition parties exploring new alliances and political vehicles to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.
