Asian Games: Wushu, karate take centre stage as medal quest continues [WATCH]

Karate fighter An Jeong-eun claimed victory in the first inter-Korean match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on Monday. She defeated North Korean competitor Jong Se-ri with a score of 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the women's -61 kilogram kumite event, which took place at the Toyohashi Gymnasium in Toyohashi, Japan, located approximately 70 kilometers southeast of Nagoya.

In kumite, two athletes engage in attack-based scoring, and the one with the higher point total is declared the winner. An advanced to the semifinals, where she faced off against Gong Li of China, ultimately losing with a score of 8-0. Jong Se-ri is one of two Korean nationals residing in Japan participating under the North Korean flag, with Ri Song-a being the other, representing the North Korean women's football team.

The historic all-Korean showdown occurred in the karate bout between An and Jong, marking the first such event at the Asian Games, which commenced on Saturday. Later that day, An Jeong-eun joined her fellow Korean women's football players as they began their final preliminary-round match against another Korean team at the Shizuoka Stadium Ecopa in Fukuroi, situated roughly 104 kilometers east of Nagoya.
