Apple Smart Home Display Coming as Soon as Next Month

Apple could unveil its long-rumored smart home display as early as October, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The device is expected to serve as a central interface for controlling accessories, communicating with family members, accessing media, and utilizing Apple services. Apple is reportedly conducting extensive testing of the product within employees' homes.

The tabletop model, designated as J490, and the wall-mountable version, J491, are both linked to unreleased products in macOS Tahoe 26.7. Both models are anticipated to share a compact square display, with one featuring a base suitable for desks or counters, while the other is designed for wall mounting. The screen is expected to be smaller than those used in many Amazon Echo Show models.

Apple is reportedly developing a dedicated operating system built around Siri AI, drawing visual elements from iOS, tvOS, and watchOS. The interface will include a Home Screen, widgets, and customizable clock designs, enabling information to remain visible even when the device is not actively in use. Users will be able to search information across their Apple devices and accounts using Siri AI, retrieve previously shared media, locate photos, and request specific actions within apps.

The device's camera is expected to support video calls and recognize individual household members, presenting personalized information such as appointments, notes, media preferences, and news. The camera system is said to perform this recognition without the depth-sensing components used for Face ID. Other expected functions encompass smart home controls, intercom communication, music and video playback, and access to applications like Calendar, Notes, and Reminders.

An iPhone will be necessary during setup and for specific connected features. This home display would mark one of the first major new products introduced under Apple CEO John Ternus, positioning it as a hub for the home alongside the iPhone, Apple TV, and HomePod.
