Austin, Texas (AP) — An ICE officer shot and injured a man early Sunday in the city's north side, the local authorities reported. The wounded individual was in serious but stable condition at a hospital after being hit in the torso during a traffic stop, Austin police chief Lisa Davis told reporters alongside the city's mayor and other officials.

The Department of Homeland Security, which manages ICE, did not take part in the news conference and declined to comment on the shooting, citing routine procedural reasons. Mayor Kirk Watson, a Democrat, called for the city's police department to play a role in the investigation, requesting "clear, third-party eyes" to ensure a fair process.
