6 killed, 2 injured as truck collides with commercial vehicle in Kogi

Six individuals lost their lives and two others sustained serious injuries in a tragic road accident that occurred on the Kabba–Odo-Ape Road within the Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State. The incident unfolded on a Saturday afternoon around 2:35pm, when a commercial vehicle engaged in a collision with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

Eyewitnesses reported that the force of the collision caused significant damage to one of the vehicles, scattering debris across the roadway. Community sources revealed that several individuals within the affected vehicle were trapped under the debris, necessitating extensive efforts by rescuers to extricate some of the deceased.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, confirmed the crash to have taken place at approximately 2:41pm, attributing it to instances of speeding and reckless driving. Fagge noted that a total of eight individuals were involved in the accident, consisting of three males and five females.

Of these victims, six lost their lives, while two others experienced severe injuries. The injured individuals and the deceased were transported to General Hospital Kabba for medical attention and post-mortem examinations. The FRSC continues to emphasize the importance of motorists refraining from speeding and engaging in unnecessary overtakes, as such actions contribute to road crashes.

The Kogi State government has expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and conveyed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo's sympathies, describing the loss of lives as deeply sorrowful and regrettable. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, urged motorists to prioritize safety on the roads, warning that no destination is worth the risk of endangering human lives.

Fanwo called for heightened caution by drivers, particularly highlighting speeding, dangerous overtaking, and fatigued driving as factors that can transform routine journeys into tragic events.
