5 British schoolgirls, 14-15, build firebreak robot, represent UK globally

Five British schoolgirls from Kent, aged 14 to 15, have designed a robot with five-meter folding arms to combat wildfires. Their innovative creation has earned them the honor of representing Great Britain at an international robotics competition in South Korea. The team, called Team Meglabyte from The Folkestone School for Girls, created the robot to clear dry vegetation and create firebreaks, thus reducing the spread of fires.

The robotics club at the school was established in 2024, yet it has already been chosen to represent Britain at this year's FIRST Global Challenge, an international competition that gathers over 190 student teams from various countries to address global environmental and technological issues. This year's theme is wildfire prevention, control, and recovery.

The Folkestone students engineered an autonomous vehicle equipped with long, folding arms capable of clearing paths up to five meters wide through dry vegetation. The robot removes combustible plant matter, creating natural barriers that can slow down fire spread while keeping firefighters safe. The students collaborated with local firefighters to ensure their robot could handle the real-world conditions of wildfires.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service provided valuable insights, helping the team design a lightweight, stable robot that could operate effectively even in challenging terrain and thick smoke.

Despite being a relatively new robotics program, the team secured a spot in the national selection process and became the sole British representative at the competition. To fund their trip to Incheon, South Korea, and the necessary materials for building their robot, the students launched a crowdfunding campaign. They aim to inspire more girls in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and raise awareness about the competition's focus on wildfires.

The Folkestone School for Girls team will participate in the FIRST Global Challenge, where they will compete against robotics teams from around the world. Beyond the competition, the students plan to establish outreach programs for primary schools, providing younger pupils with basic coding kits and lesson plans that demonstrate how engineering can tackle real environmental challenges.
