World Alzheimer’s Day Highlights Need For Timely Dementia Diagnosis In Bhopal

Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh: The prevalence of dementia among the elderly in the city is on the rise, with neurologists warning that the burden is expected to double within the next decade. As World Alzheimer’s Day is observed on September 21, medical professionals have emphasized the importance of staying mentally active through activities like reading and solving mathematical problems.

In Madhya Pradesh, the dementia prevalence rate stands at 6.75%, marginally lower than the national average of 7.4%. The focus of the 2026 campaign is on Alzheimer’s diagnosis: its significance, the benefits it provides to families, and why most individuals delay seeking a diagnosis. Among the major challenges faced by the elderly are chronic diseases, reduced mobility, loneliness, social isolation, and financial insecurity.

Dr Narendra Rai, a neurologist, stressed the significance of keeping the brain engaged to help manage dementia, stating that after the age of 60, its prevalence doubles every ten years. He urged both men and women to remain mentally active to combat dementia. Dr ID Chaurasia, a retired medical superintendent from Hamidia Hospital, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the role of a healthy lifestyle and mental engagement in controlling dementia.

He noted that stress contributes to the prevalence of dementia among the elderly and recommended maintaining cheerfulness and adhering to a nutritious diet. Dementia is a progressive brain disorder that initially impairs memory, subsequently affecting reasoning, language, and the ability to perform daily tasks. It evolves gradually over many years, often leading families to attribute early signs to other causes.
