Workers came across human remains – and unearthed a mass grave of 572 people

In northern Sri Lanka, a mass grave containing the skeletal remains of 572 individuals, including children and infants, was discovered in February. Workers were extending a cremation ground in the Chemmani area of the Jaffna region when they unexpectedly uncovered the human remains, triggering an investigation. By August, archaeologists completed the third phase of excavation, revealing the largest mass grave site ever found in Sri Lanka.

Among the deceased were artifacts, such as bangles, a school bag, and a milk bottle. Eyewitnesses, including a soldier on trial for a rape and murder during the civil war, had previously mentioned a mass grave with hundreds of bodies. Rights groups claimed the remains belonged to civilians who had disappeared, though no proof existed until now.

This discovery has provided hope to families like Jeyaruby Jeyabalan, whose father was among the thousands who vanished during the war. Jeyabalan and others hope answers about their loved ones' fate lie within the remains. Many Tamils believe the grave contains victims of extrajudicial killings during the civil war and are demanding justice.

However, the excavation at Chemmani has been slow, frustration mounting among families searching for answers about their disappeared relatives. The revelation of another mass grave nearby has intensified anger among Tamils, who have long demanded a thorough inquiry into disappearances. The discovery has become a rallying point for renewed protests in Sri Lanka's north.
