White House press group demands Trump immediately lift reporters ban

An association representing numerous White House journalists has demanded that the Trump administration promptly lift the ban on access to the White House for colleagues from CNN, POLITICO, and MSNOW. The group argues that the removal of access violates the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which protects press freedom. The White House Correspondents' Association (WHCA) stated that once journalists are granted access to the White House, the administration cannot arbitrarily deny that access based on the content of their reporting.

Journalists from the affected outlets confirmed their inability to enter the White House on Saturday, describing encounters with security personnel who confiscated their access badges. The Secret Service also confiscated access passes, according to Politico editor-in-chief Jonathan Greenberger. White House correspondent Akayla Gardner of MSNOW explained that her access badge did not work at the usual security checkpoint, leading to confiscation of her badge by a security officer.

Trump accused the media of constantly writing and reporting "FICTION and LIES" about his presidency. He has frequently criticized the press, filing multiple defamation lawsuits against news outlets and verbally assaulting several reporters, including women. However, outright barring news outlets from the White House is rare, although Trump did ban CNN reporter Jim Acosta during his first term, an action later overturned by a court.

This unprecedented move by Trump marks a significant escalation in his long-standing feud with mainstream media. His actions have come at a time when his approval ratings are at record lows, and his Republican Party faces potential losses in the upcoming midterm elections. The conflict stems from Trump's dissatisfaction with media coverage, including criticisms of his policies and statements, as well as his attempts to control the narrative through various means, such as filing defamation suits and restricting media access to certain events and spaces within the White House.
